Some meetings are enjoyable, some are important, and others are exciting. This morning’s meeting with a Supported Employment provider in Stockport was, I would say, pivotal for OurBoards. For while it’s been my vision for OurBoards to provide employment for people who are autistic or who have learning disabilities. This morning’s meeting helped to clarify, in my mind, how that could work in practice.
The plan that emerged was one in which OurBoards Limited would employ people to work less than 16hrs per week and earn less that £120 per week. In this way we will be able to provide Supported Employment opportunities for the largest number people that we can without effecting those people’s allowances. I believe that employment provides a sense of value and purpose as well as a welcome boost to household finances. I’ve read many articles about how having a child with learning disabilities can adversely effect family finances.
In addition to OurBoards I am also an IT Consultant / Contractor through my company, Harvest Consulting. IT is well known as a comfortable environment for many autistic employees and I intend to create Supported Employment opportunities for web developers and IT Technicians.
The Supported Employment opportunities will be offered through existing Supported Employment providers and schools and colleges with a Whole School SEND culture.
A further development of the vision for OurBoards is to work with professionals in the community that support families. I’m at an early stage co-developing a model to provide OurBoards products through support professionals in the community working with children and adults who are autistic or have Learning Disabilities, ADHD or Dementia. The cost of the products will be sponsored by local businesses, in order to make OurBoards products available at the lowest cost possible. I believe that offering products for free can be counterproductive, as there is literally no sense of ownership, so we will look to offer products at approximately 75% discount from the list price.
OurBoards and Harvest Consulting are a few months off arriving at the place that we need to be to start providing Supported Employment opportunities. If the vision excites you and you might be interested to invest in OurBoards to make the vision a reality, then please message me or leave a comment.
